Sholem Aleichem's short stories, such as "Tevye and His Daughters," served as the inspiration for "Fiddler on the Roof," a 1905 play with lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, book by Joseph Stein, and music by Jerry Bock (also known as "Tevye the Dairyman"). Tevye, a milkman from a nearby small town in Anatevka, is the central character of the story. He challenges the residents of his town to hold on to its Jewish religious and social norms as outer social influences impose on the life of his family. Tevye must come to terms with the fact that his three older daughters would like to find love on their own terms and are independent women – he becomes less and less fond of the men they have chosen as their future husbands. Tsarist law finally compels the Jews to leave their neighborhood.
This theatrical production has received nine Tony Awards, including ones for best musical, score, book, direction, and choreography. It further went on to receive five Broadway revivals, a massively successful 1971 film adaptation, and its influence can still be witnessed today. It has also frequently been used for productions in the community and in academia. A number of well-known musical hits, including "Tradition," "Sunrise, Sunset," "If I Were A Rich Man," "Matchmaker, Matchmaker," and "To Life (L'Chaim!)", will be performed to thunderous applause. Fans of musical theater should not miss this.
